Before the Dawn
by  Dean Hughes

Before the DawnWhen the bishop calls Leah Sorensen to be Relief Society president, her first impulse is to assume he is joking. "They'd all vote against me if you put my name up," she tells him, "and I'd vote with them." She's prickly and proud, a farm widow who doesn't get along with the town women at all. Why would the Lord want her? Because it's 1932, the depth of the Great Depression, and, as the bishop tells Leah: "You lost your husband and you didn't give up. You know how to survive hard times, and some women in our ward don't. I'm not looking for a nice church lady right now. I'm looking for someone with some grit, and that's what you've got." But will grit be enough when the opposition begins?

Saboteur:  A Novel of Love and War
by  Dean Hughes

So Much of Life AheadThe year is 1943, and Andy Gledhill's months of training as a paratrooper have culminated in his being assigned to the 89th Airborne. But he soon learns that government has other plans for him. The newly formed Office of Strategic Services needs soldiers with language talents like Andy's to drop into Europe behind enemy lines and help fight the war from the inside out. Andy's new life of deception and sabotage is worlds away from his upbringing in sleepy little Delta, Utah. But even that town is changing, as the nearby Topaz relocation camp ignites racial tensions. And Whisper Harris, the girl Andy left behind, is caught in a maelstrom of conflicting emotions brought on by the war. Should she release Andy from the promises they've made, as he seems to have released her? Or should she keep on hoping?

Search and Destroy
by  Dean Hughes

Search and DestroyRick Ward wants to go to war.

He doesn't know why. Maybe he's running from his dad, who has an uncontrollable temper. Maybe he's running from a lost love, his high-school sweetheart, who is a stranger to him now. Or maybe he's just running -- to find himself.

Desperate to experience real life, Rick enlists in the army with the Charlie Rangers, a special unit in Vietnam. They infiltrate the jungle, kill with precision, and get out quickly. Rick isn't sure he can shoot anyone, but he wants to be tested, like his heroes, Hemingway and Conrad. If he can see the heart of darkness and survive, he'll be a man -- and finally have something to write about.

But as Rick discovers, war isn't what anyone -- either the protestors, the politicians, or the writers -- say it is. It's far bigger, scarier, and more complicated than anything he could ever have imagined.

Dean Hughes captures the sights and sounds of war -- and the courage of a young soldier fighting to survive.

Hearts of the Children
by  Dean Hughes

“Every era has its own refiner's fire, and World War II put general Church membership and Utah to a test,” Dean explains. In Children of the Promise, his first historical fiction series for adults, Dean shows through the eyes of the Thomas family how LDS families were tested to the limit.

“When I was working on the last volume of Children of the Promise,” Dean Hughes says, “I was saddened to think of ending my ‘friendship’ with the Thomases, and many people told me that they felt the same way. But the war was over, and it seemed the right place to stop. Sheri Dew, at Deseret Book, kept telling me that I ought to write about the sixties, and those were fascinating years to me, so I decided to combine the two ideas: come back to the Thomases at a later time, and tell the dramatic story of the sixties and seventies when our nation-and many families-almost pulled apart at the seams.”

In Hearts of the Children, Dean continues the family saga he began in the World War II-era Children of the Promise series with a new series set in the turbulent 1960s. In stunning details he shows how the turmoil of the period affects an ordinary family of Latter-day Saints.
